The minimum requirements for new data are the sphere item names shown in the first row and second column, together with the relation codes as necessary. Sequence codes may be included in the spreadsheet as column headers or data in the first column or may be allocated during the import process. Similarly, the sphere pair which defines the relationship, shown in the heading of the first column may be identified during import. It is, however, necessary for a successful import, that the spheres have already been defined in the project schema. The date/time stamp shown is a result of the creation of the sample from Strategy SAVIŽ and is not required for new data.

Ready?

When you are satisfied with the spreadsheet version of the matrix, you should exit from the spreadsheet (it is not possible to import from an open file) and return to Strategy SAVIŽ. Note that you must save the matrix from the spreadsheet processor in the format in which it arrived. If you have changed the format in ways which the current import into Paradox does not support, you may not be able to carry out the import. Now click the Matrix Import button to launch the matrix import selector form and recover the new or revised details. If you are working from one of the relation processing forms the appropriate button is the Import Matrix button or from the menu, the Re-Import Matrix button for a previously exported matrix or the Import New Matrix button for new material.

Choose the File Type and Identity

Generally you will want to use the browser to identify the desired file. Select an input file type from one of the formats:

ASCII Comma Delimited

Excel 3.0/4.0/5.0 (the default)

Lotus 2.x

Quattro Pro for Windows

and click the browse button to show lists of the required file type. This is the standard Windows browser for opening a file and no further instructions will be given here. Alternatively you can type in the full path and name of the desired file instead of using the browser.

Final Cell ID

This section does not apply to an ASCII Comma Delimited input. Before a spreadsheet can be imported, the final cell of the import range must be identified. This is carried out automatically for most single page workbooks and the value is entered in the Final Cell ID field. The value shown includes a worksheet name and separator if appropriate (e.g. My Matrix!EF82 for an Excel worksheet named "My Matrix" and with a range from A1 to EF82). If your matrix is part of a multi sheet workbook or has been copied from a multi sheet workbook or has contained other data no longer visible etc. it can occur that the end cell id derived from the spreadsheet file is wrong so please check it to avoid a subsequent error. If necessary you can click the View button to launch the spreadsheet processor and find this piece of information but you must remember to close it again before attempting the import.

Matrix Type

If you have have returned after exporting a matrix from the Relation entry or relation review forms, the matrix type list box will already be set to the required type. If you are using the re-import from the facilities page of the menu, you must be sure to set it to the correct type, the same as the original export. Import of new material will normally be to an MXE matrix type.

Reviewing the Input

After entering the necessary data, click the Import button. This will import the file to the table form of the matrix and then launch either the new matrix identification form for import of new material or the matrix import manager form. Here you can review the matrix as it currently appears. If you have deleted items from the matrix externally, in the spreadsheet, you should ensure that the Delete Check check box is on. This will enable you to review each deleted item, still present in the relations table, as it is reached in the copy process. To copy the import table contents to the appropriate relations table, click the Copy Over button.

During the copy process, any new items introduced into the matrix rows or columns in the spreadsheet form will be added to the sphere tables. On the other hand, deleted items will NOT be removed so as to preserve possible hierarchical or other relations not considered in this matrix. Only relations can be deleted from the relation table at this stage.
